Miguel Ángel Asturias (Ciudad de Guatemala 1899-Madrid 1974) caracterizó su obra por el uso creativo del idioma y por la importante reconversión que hizo de los mundos mágico y mítico. Cotraductor del Papol Vuh, el libro sagrado de los indios quichés, fue defensor de los pueblos indígenas y de su cultura, así como de las libertades para el ser humano. Ocupó cargos políticos y diplomáticos en diversos países y fue galardonado con los premios Lenin de la Paz 1965 y Nobel de Literatura 1967. Sus obras más conocidas son El señor Presidente, Hombres de maíz y Leyendas de Guatemala.
