Autora chilena considerada la madre del realismo mágico y una de las grandes silenciada del boom latinoamericano. A los doce años, tras la muerte de su padre, comenzó a cursar estudios en París, ciudad en la que residió hasta 1931. En 1933 se estableció en Buenos Aires, se hospedó durante dos años en casa de Pablo Neruda y entró en contacto con el grupo de la revista Sur. En 1940 contrajo matrimonio con el conde Raphael de Saint-Phalle y se marchó a vivir a Estados Unidos, donde permaneció hasta la muerte de su marido en 1970, fecha en que regresó a Chile. En su obra se vale igualmente de lo realista y de lo sobrenatural para explorar el mundo interior femenino, especialmente el deseo, en el contexto de la sociedad patriarcal de su tiempo.
