The reading oflbn 'Arabi's thought requires prior knowledge of its intellectual context. This context is here presented from a hermeneutical point of view through a methodology based on philology understood as a task of interpreting a cultural field in terms of a different cultural field on the basis of discourses. The world that is described is basically a unitary cosmos in which ali its elements reflect that underlying unity: the particular beings, knowledge, the access roads to knowledge. But lbn 'Arabi cannot be reduced to the world whose knowledge is a prerequisite for the full understanding ofhis thought.
