La vita di Valentina, la protagonista, è condizionata dalle proprie origini. Il marito di suo madre la riconoscerà ufficialmente come figlia ma lei non lo sentirà mai come un padre. Il passato peserà nel suo presente anche nel rapporto con l’altro sesso. Incredibilmente detesterà la propria bellezza, come fosse un difetto. Per il desiderio che suscita negli uomini che incontra. Respingerà ogni tentazione d’innamoramento nel terrore di ripetere l’errore della madre. Ma, tuttavia, sempre affamata d’amore, senza volerlo ammettere. Si aggrappa a Dafne, donna più matura della madre e le si affida. E' una compensazione alle carenze affettive, oltre che un’alternativa all’infelicità e al suo male di vivere.
