Integran esta primera edición de Inventario Dos todos los poemas que he publicado en libro entre 1986 y 1991: Preguntas al azar (1986), Yesterday y mañana (1988),Integran esta primera edición de Inventario Dos todos los poemas que he publicado en libro entre 1986 y 1991: Preguntas al azar (1986), Yesterday y mañana (1988), Despistes y franquezas (1990) y Las soledades de Babel (1991).     Este volumen es la continuación o complemento del primer tomo de Inventario (Poesía 1950-1985; 42.ª edición, 10.ª en España).     En ambos volúmenes, algunos poemas que posteriormente fueron transformados en canciones, figuran en sus dos textos - poema y canción -, cada uno de ellos incluido en el lugar y época correspondientes.    El volumen se abre con la producción más reciente y concluye con la más antigua, quizá con la secreta esperanza de que el lector, al tener acceso a esta obra por la puerta más nueva y más cercana, se vea luego tentado a ir abriendo otras puertas, .
