En 1948, tras la Segunda Guerra Mundial, Viena esta destrozada. Apenas hay comida y cuesta encontrar empleo. Johanna, a sus dieciseis años, aspira a trabajar de camarera en una cafeteria; debe mantener a su madre, hundida en la depresion desde que su padre murio en el frente. Cuando es despedida, el mundo se le cae encima. Sin embargo, ese mismo dia un encuentro casual con un psiquiatra que sufrio la persecucion nazi y con un joven norteamericano que la entrevista para un articulo le ayudaran a encontrar la motivacion para vivir.
