Die Beiträge dieses Bandes gehen auf ein internationales und interdisziplinäres Symposion zurück, das im Oktober 1994 von der Bibliothèque Nationale Luxembourg in Verbindung mit dem Leo Baeck Institute London, dem Lehr- und Forschungsgebiet Deutsch-jüdische Literaturgeschichte der RWTH Aachen und dem Department of Hebrew and Comparative Literature der Universität Haifa veranstaltet wurde. Es ging um die Frage, welche Varianten es in Mitteleuropa im Zeitraum zwischen etwa 1870 und dem "Dritten Reich" bzw. dem Beginn des Zweiten Weltkriegs gab, sich persönlich wie kollektiv als Jude wahrzunehmen und ggf. zu definieren.
