Retrata una sociedad patriarcal donde ella es triplemente esclava: esclava del hombre al que pertenece, esclava por el trabajo desarrollado, esclava por la Historia. Como en todos los artistas verdaderos, tiene una preocupación por el hombre, lo que le hace comparable a cineastas como Flaherty, Renoir, o Murnau. Se sentía un humanista, pero no tenía ninguna esperanza acerca de nuestro destino.
