La gestión privada del monopolio fiscal de tabacos por la Compañía Arrendataria de Tabacos, predecesora de Tabacalera y Altadis, modernizó la gestión y mecanizó la producción reduciendo la mano de obra en casi un 70%. En 1887 era el mayor empleador industrial del país con más de 30.000 trabajadores distribuidos en diez fábricas de los que más del 95% eran mujeres, las famosas cigarreras. Lina Gálvez-Muñoz ha recibido el Premio Ramón Carande de Historia Económica 1999 por este trabajo.
