Escrito por Max Weber, un economista y sociólogo alemán, entre 1904 y 1905, como una serie de ensayos. Más tarde se publicó como libro. No obstante, fue publicado desde 1905 en la revista Archiv für Sozialwissenschaft und Sozialpolitik. Este libro no debe verse como un estudio detallado del protestantismo, sino, por un lado, como un estudio de la significación del modo de vida protestante para la cultura y en especial de cómo influyó en la constitución del espíritu capitalista. Por otro lado, como una introducción a trabajos posteriores en los que desarrolla más profundamente temas sólo esbozados en este libro o presentados en él como programa. Cuando se refiere al protestantismo, hace hincapié (explícitamente) en una rama de él: el calvinismo, por ser la tendencia que Weber considera más influyente para el modo de vida y la moral burguesas.
