A La fuerza del amor corresponde la primacía cronoló- gica del teatro de Azorín. Publicada en 1901 y muy distante estéticamente del mejor teatro vanguardista del autor, ha permanecido por ello generalmente relegada al olvido del público y de la crítica. Se la rescata en esta edición con un adecuado estudio que pone de relieve sus logros en el contexto de un ambicioso proyecto que vio implicado al joven Martínez Ruiz dentro del marco regeneracionista del «problema de España». El estudio y representación del pasado español se hace centro de irradiación desde el que se iluminan los males patrios de siempre. Magistral resulta el esfuerzo reconstructivo del «medio vital» español del siglo XVII.
