La travesía completa de toda la cadena pirenaica, desde un mar al otro, siempre ha subyugado a los montañeros de ambas vertientes, tanto en la época de los pioneros como en los tiempos actuales. Louis Audoubert, montañero y pirineísta francés de primera línea, no podía escapar a esta seducción. Él y su compañero Guy Panozzo recorrieron 750 kilómetros de cordillera pirenaica, encadenando cumbres fáciles con picos agudos, con agujas y con crestas. Efectuaron 49 vivacs y subieron y bajaron 180.000 metros de desnivel. De ellos 3.000 fueron de descenso en rápel. Desde las rocas mediterráneas donde nacen los Pirineos, hasta el pico vasco de Larrún, sobre la playa del Cantábrico, llevaron a cabo como jamás se había hecho, la travesía más íntegra de una cadena montañosa.
