El ingeniero Wolf y su ayudante, el mecánico Lazuli, construyen una máquina del tiempo gracias a la que Wolf pretende, mediante el retorno a su infancia, conjurar todos los errores y todas las obsesiones que le habían acosado entonces. Sólo exorcizando aquellas sombras estará, cree él, en condiciones de recuperar la facultad de gozar de los fugaces instantes de felicidad que le brinda la vida. Pero todos sabemos que los inquisidores no aceptan semejantes audacias y quién sabe si Wolf conseguirá sobreponerse a ellos…Esta es tal vez la novela más intimista y menos burlesca de Vian, y muchas de las situaciones remiten sin duda a su vida personal. No obstante, a la ternura que inspira esta historia, a la vez dolorosa y patética, Vian no puede dejar de añadir, como siempre en toda su obra, la desbordante fantasía y la lúcida insolencia que otorga a personajes e historias esa mágica y contagiosa vitalidad que atrapa de principio a fin a sus lectores de ayer y de hoy, más que incondicionales adictos.
