La Leyenda de Sleepy Hollow, la increíble historia del curioso maestro de escuela Ichabod Crane y de un jinete sin cabeza que aterroriza sobre su imponente caballo a una tranquila y pintoresca población agrícola de una comarca de origen holandés situada en las cercanías del río Hudson norteamericano, cerca de Nueva York, es un fabuloso relato corto de terror escrito en 1820 por Washington Irving, dentro de su colección de ensayos e historias cortas titulado The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, cuya lectura no deja a nadie indiferente. Del jinete decapitado se comenta que es el fantasma de un antiguo soldado al que una bala de cañón alcanzó en la cabeza durante una dura batalla de la Guerra de la Independencia norteamericana. De Ichabod Crane se sabe que fracasa en su loable intento de conquistar a la bella y rica heredera Katrina. Cuando ambos confluyen cierta noche cerrada en un angosto puente, se produce la misteriosa desaparición del maestro y surge el misterio.
