Perteneciente a la serie de novelas que constituyen las Memorias de un hombre de acción, La nave de los locos presenta una visión de España en el momento de crisis total del final de la guerra civil en el siglo XIX. Es, pues, una novela histórica, a pesar del tan pregonado antihistoricismo de Baroja, que describe un mundo del que el autor fue consciente de ser testigo último, un mundo que se transformaba y cambiaba y del que había que dejar memoria. La nave de los locos constituye también un texto técnico sobre la novela, y en su tiempo tuvo una gran repercusión al ser respuesta a los postulados que sobre este problema expuso José Ortega y Gasset en su libro Idea sobre la novela.
