Synopsis "La religieuse (in French)"

Inspiré par une histoire vécue, Diderot imagine que la religieuse Suzanne Simonie raconte ses mésaventures en 1760. Spoliée de sa dot, elle séjourne dans trois couvents successifs. La première supérieure est cupide, la deuxième est ascétique, la troisième est d'une sensualité éperdue qui fait vivre tout le couvent en fête. Diderot décrit ce qui arrive lorsqu'on contredit "la pente générale de la nature ". Je ne crois pas qu'on ait écrit une plus effroyable satire des couvents, disait-il. La Religieuse est aussi et surtout une chaleureuse apologie de la liberté individuelle.
