En marzo de 1208, el papa Inocencio III predicó una cruzada contra una secta de cristianos del Languedoc. Hoy se los conoce habitualmente con el nombre de cátaros. Ellos se llamaban a sí mismos bons chrétiens, «buenos cristianos»; Bernardo de Claraval los denominaba albigenses, y en los registros de la Inquisición aparecen como heretici. El papa Inocencio se propuso expulsar a los cátaros del Mediodía francés y restaurar la autoridad religiosa de la Iglesia católica. Los barones del norte de Francia que se unieron a su cruzada vieron en ella la oportunidad de adquirir tierras, riquezas y privilegios comerciales, subyugando a una nobleza meridional ferozmente independiente.
