Escrito en Estados Unidos entre 1936 y 1939, durante la Guerra Civil española, que supuso para Pedro Salinas el comienzo de un exilio que se prolongaría hasta su muerte, LARGO LAMENTO cierra la gran trilogía amorosa que ocupó al poeta durante seis años de su vida. El amor victorioso, arrebatado, súbito descubrimiento de sensualidad y ternura, presente en «La voz a ti debida» (BA 0287), y transformado más tarde, con «Razón de amor» (BA 0288), en sentimiento más pausado y reflexivo, se convierte en «Largo lamento» en recuerdo de una felicidad efímera. El poeta se sumerge en el pasado para tratar de revivirlo en la memoria.
