Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) es uno de esos genios que iluminan toda una época: poeta lírico, épico y dramático, científico, versado en las artes, gran estadista. Formó parte del grupo "Sturm und Drang", que marcó el comienzo de la literatura en lengua alemana. "Werther" (1774) influyó en el lenguaje, en las pasiones y hasta en la moda de numerosos jóvenes. El poderoso hálito romántico de la obra, su belleza formal y el acierto de la expresión escogida (la epistolar), lograron que calara hondamente en su época, y quedara para la posteridad como muestra perfecta de literatura subjetivista, y conjunción de vida y poesía.

Poeta, novelista, dramaturgo, científico y político alemán. En la Universidad de Estrasburgo conoció a Herder, quien lo introdujo a las obras de Shakespeare y a quien ayudó después a crear el movimiento romántico alemán Sturm und Drang. En 1775 Carlos Augusto, heredero del ducado de Sajonia-Weimar, invitó a Goethe a vivir y trabajar en Weimar, que entonces era uno de los centros intelectuales y literarios de Alemania. Allí desarrolló una brillante carrera política que finalmente abandonó para dedicarse a viajar y a escribir. Es uno de mayores exponentes literarios del Romanticismo y para muchos el escritor más importante que han dado las letras alemanas.
