Los veintiún poemas del ciclo Cristal de aliento de Paul Celan -incluidos en el presente libro en una nueva traducción al castellano por Arnau Pons- fueron publicados en una edición de bibliófilo en septiembre de 1965, acompañados de ocho grabados de Gisèle Celan-Lestrange. Fue ese mismo otoño, marcado por esta colaboración artística, que la pareja decidió separarse, al menos temporalmente. Los graves conflictos que vivían a causa de las crisis psíquicas del poeta hacían muy difícil una vida en común. Lo cierto es que en estos poemas Celan reafirma su preferencia por una pareja que nunca le fallará: su alter ego, al que llama Tú.
