Synopsis "Lepidoptera and Conservation"

This Book Is Proposed To Complement Two Other Recent Volumes Published By Wiley - Blackwell On Conservation Of Major Orders Of Insects (Beetles 2010, Hymenoptera 2012), And So To Complete A Trilogy Of Global Overviews Of Conservation Of These Diverse And Ecologically Important Groups. Each Has Different Priorities And Emphases That Collectively Summarise Much Of The Progress And Purpose Of Invertebrate Conservation. Much Of The Foundation Of Insect Conservation Has Been Built On Concerns For Lepidoptera, Particularly Butterflies As The Most Popular And Best Studied Of All Insect Groups. The Long - Accepted Worth Of Butterflies For Conservation Has Led To Elucidation Of Much Of The Current Rationale Of Insect Species Conservation, And To Definition And Management Of Their Critical Resources, With Attention To The Intensively Documented British Fauna Leading The World In This Endeavour. The Literature On Butterfly Conservation, In Particular, Is Vast And Increasing Rapidly And The Level Of Detail On Some Taxa (And The Formulation Of More General Conservation Prescriptions) By Far Exceeds That On Other Insects. Despite This Interest, In Recent Years Expanding Rapidly To Encompass Moths And Lepidoptera In Many Parts Of The World And Fostered By Substantial Publications Including The Proceedings Of Some Carefully - Focused Thematic Symposia, There Is No Broad And Accessible Global Overview Of This Theme That Integrates The Burgeoning Information Into A General Account Of Lepidoptera Conservation And Assesses Achievements And The Ways Forward. I Plan To Attempt This. Whilst Recognizing The Daunting Complexity Of This Task, And My Own Limitations In Undertaking It, I Believe The Outcome Will Be A Useful Contribution To The Documentation And Development Of Insect Conservation. As With Beetles And Hymenoptera, The Various Themes Will Be Treated Through Relevant Examples And Case Histories, And Sufficient Background Given To Enable Non - Specialist Access. The Book Is Thus Intended To Be Readable By Conservation Managers And Naturalists With Little Knowledge Of Insect Conservation Or Lepidopteran Ecology, But Also Of Value To More Experienced And Advanced Workers. A Tentative Contents List Of Chapters Is Provided To Indicate The Scope Of The Proposed Book. All Major Themes Of Insect Conservation Will Be Included, With Emphasis On How Studies On Lepidoptera Have Led To Advances In Perspective, Theory And Practice
