Imparte filosofía continental, psicoanálisis, teoría política, estudios culturales, crítica cinematográfica, marxismo, hegelianismo y teología.
En 1989, Žižek publicó su primer texto en inglés, The Sublime Object of Ideology (El sublime objeto de la ideología), en el que se apartó de la teoría marxista tradicional para desarrollar una concepción materialista de la ideología que se basó en gran medida en el psicoanálisis lacaniano y el idealismo hegeliano.
En 2012, Foreign Policy incluyó a Žižek en su lista de los 100 mejores pensadores globales, llamándolo una «celebridad filosófica».
