Es una escritora estadounidense de literatura infantil, conocida sobre todo por su obra El dador. Ha vivido en distintas partes de todo el mundo. Comenzó su carrera como fotógrafa y periodista independiente en la década de 1970. Su trabajo llamó la atención de Houghton Mifflin, que la animó a escribir su primer libro infantil. Autora de más de 30 libros para jóvenes lectores. Ha recibido innumerables premios, entre ellos la prestigiosa medalla Newbery por El Dador de recuerdos.
