Nació en 1948 en Estocolmo, Suecia. Tres años más tarde, él y sus padres, supervivientes de un campo de concentración nazi, se trasladan a Nueva York. En 1978 crea la revista RAW, una publicación que sirve de refugio para todos aquellos autores norteamericanos y europeos cuyo trabajo no tiene cabida en el mercado popular. Fue en RAW donde dio a conocer su obra más conocida: MAUS. Es profesor en la School of Visual Arts de Nueva York ha ilustrado publicaciones en NEW YORK TIMES, PLAYBOY, VILLAGE VOICE y el semanario THE NEW YORKER.
