Brian Weiss, después de obtener el titulo de médico «cum laude» en la Universidad de Columbia y de completar su formación en la Escuela de Medicina de la Universidad de Yale, trabajó como médico interno en el hospital de la Universidad de Nueva York y se especializó en psiquiatría.

En ese periodo escribió varios artículos científicos.
