En este libro Jacques Lafaye se avoca en desentrañar la trayectoria personal e intelectual de Octavio Paz, desde sus años de infancia en Mixcoac hasta su enfrentamiento ideológico con los poderes fácticos a través de las revistas Plural y Vuelta, sin dejar de ahondar en la influencia que tuvieron en él sus años como diplomático en Francia (entre 1945 y 1961) y que le permitieron dialogar con las más grandes figuras intelectuales de la época. Lafaye -quien fuera amigo y colaborador de Paz- no se limita al análisis poético, ni al simple relato biográfico, sino que logra adentrarse en las diversas latitudes por las que navegó la pluma del pensador mexicano: política, antropología, historia, filosofía, crítica de arte; todo le sirve para elaborar un minucioso retrato de quien fuera poeta indiscutible y crítico ejemplar de la modernidad.
