Ida Vitale naqció en 1923 en Montevideo, puerto de Lautréamont, Supervielle y Laforgue, donde estudió humanidades y fue docente de literatura hasta los años setenta. Muy precozmente vaticinaron su destino un poema de Gabriela Mistral, la fascinación legada por el mundo natural y la guía de José Bergamín -que escribió sobre ella en 1947: "das fuego a sombra, en la ceniza llama, / asombras si iluminas, verde rama"-.
