Ernesto Grassi aborda en esta obra el problema de la relación entre filosofía y poesía como presupuesto necesario para poder afirmar su tesis principal: la preeminencia de la palabra metafórica sobre la palabra racional —en base al carácter metamórfico de la realidad— y los problemas teóricos que implica. «De ahí la tesis de la identidad y diferencia que implica la superación de los límites del lenguaje racional y a su vez obliga a trasladar el problema de la metáfora más allá de su tradicional ámbito “literario”». Grassi analiza los vínculos que autores como Heidegger, el Maestro Eckhart, Novalis o el poeta italiano Ungaretti han establecido entre la filosofía y la poesía para afirmar el poder patético de la palabra.
