En esta conferencia pronunciada en la Sorbona en 1882, Renan le dio un importante vuelco, no exento de ambigüedad, a la discusión “científica” que sobre la “realidad nacional” se había venido desarrollando en la Europa decimonónica.
En la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, el siglo del nacionalismo, la geografía acechaba tras unas ciencias sociales en proceso de constitución. La antropología, la lingüística o la psicología intentaban trazar sus respectivos mapas de la diversidad humana y aportar a la política unos datos objetivos con los que ordenar la división de las naciones. Pero las circunstancias históricas cambiaron.
