El cineasta chileno Raúl Ruiz (Puerto Montt, Chile, 25 de julio de 1941 / París, 19 de agosto de 2011) comenzó su carrera como cineasta en su país, pero, tras verse obligado a exiliarse en 1973, recaló en París en 1974. A partir de entonces rodó en varios países europeos hasta que por fin pudo hacerlo de nuevo en Chile en el año 2007. Reali­zó, tanto para cine como para televisión, una obra ingente en todos los soportes, siempre innovadora e inclasificable, que ganó, entre otros premios, el Oso de Plata del Fes­tival de Berlín y la Concha de Plata al mejor director del Festival de Cine de San Sebastián en 2010. "Hombre de una imaginación desbordante, gran contador de historias rocambolescas", y de "memoria y erudición pantagruélicas", Raúl Ruiz ha sido considerado por muchos críticos como el cineasta chileno más im­portante.
