This is an impressive story which demonstrates the genuine burden of the false in our lives and the real consequences of falsehood. Everything in this book is true although it may seem incredible and perhaps even inconceivable. The author, armed with the classic instruments of the profession of reason, doubt and writing, brings to light the miseries that hide behind what was presented as a great scandal: the discovery, in 1997, of a supposed network of paedophiles in the Raval neighbourhood of Barcelona. It goes on to prove what has been the real scandal: the fact that the accusations that led to innocent citizens going to prison and their severe public humiliation (that separated parents from the children for years) were false, the product of a build up of police, judicial, administrative and journalistic errors. The atrocious chain of incompetence can only be explained by the insane attitude that the army of good adopts on a regular basis, and its application to the fight against paedophilia, the unifying evil of the era: nothing is more dangerous than blind goodness in motion. Facing the devastating truth, the author shows that journalism fulfils its social mandate when a journalist has the courage to have their say and accept all the risks of their responsibility. Raval is a work of enormous quality and merit: it vindicates a dignified journalism, allergic to political corruption, and asks many questions about the functioning of a rightist state in Spanish democracy. It falls like a heavy stone on the still waters of the mythologized Catalán oasis.
