paolo ruffini, médico y matemático italiano que vivió a caballo entre los siglos xviii y xix, es uno de los matemáticos más conocidos entre los estudiantes de educación secundaria por ser el autor de la regla de ruffini. pero la coincidencia de tantos matemáticos de primera fila (euler, lagrange, gauss, cauchy...) en su época ha podido contribuir a que no haya sido suficientemente valorado. su principal aportación fue el intento de demostrar que las ecuaciones polinómicas de grado superior al cuarto son irresolubles por radicales, problema que permanecía abierto desde el siglo xvi y que sería finalmente resuelto por galois.
