Álvaro Pombo subraya en el prólogo de este volumen que «la posguerra es el lugar de estas siete novelas cortas de Carmen Laforet, que me han recordado la intensa emoción con que leí Nada por primera vez». En efecto, esa «posguerra que circunscribe y es circunstancia de todos los personajes, incluida la propia narradora» da unidad a las obras aquí recogidas, escritas entre 1952 y 1954, después del gran éxito de su primera novela. En ellas, como dice su hijo Agustín Cerezales en la nota a esta edición, «viven una serie de personajes inolvidables y una época, una atmósfera y unos escenarios en los que Laforet nos sumerge con su habitual maestría, de tal forma que, una vez leídos, los conocemos como si los hubiéramos vivido».
