Escribió más de doce mil páginas de novelas, cuentos y artículos, y es uno de los escritores japoneses más populares dentro y fuera de su país. Mantuvo una profunda amistad con el escritor Yukio Mishima, del que fue su mentor y difusor. Recibió el Premio Nobel de Literatura en el año 1968. Entre sus obras, muchas de ellas marcadas por la soledad y el erotismo, destacan La bailarina de Izu, El maestro de Go, Lo bello y lo triste, Mil grullas, País de nieve, El rumor de la montaña e Historias de la palma de la mano. Kawabata se suicidó a los setenta y dos años.
