(Egipto 1931 - 2021) Nació en una familia acomodada en Egipto, y muy joven sufrió la mutilación de los órganos genitales. Estudió Medicina en la Universidad de El Cairo. Trabajando como médica en Kafr Tahl pudo observar las dificultades y desigualdades que enfrentan las mujeres rurales. Fue directora de Salud Pública en El Cairo. Sin embargo, fue despedida de su cargo en el Ministerio de Salud por sus actividades políticas, que también le costaron los cargos de jefa de redacción de un diario de salud y de secretaria general adjunta de la Asociación Médica de Egipto. Entre 1973 y 1976 trabajó en la investigación de la neurosis en las mujeres en la Universidad Ain Shams, y entre 1979 y 1980 fue asesora de las Naciones Unidas para el Programa de la Mujer en África (CEP) y de Oriente Próximo (CEPA). Fue encarcelada en 1981 por su oposición a los Acuerdos de Paz de Camp-David entre Egipto e Israel del presidente Anwar al Sadat. En 1991, tras recibir amenazas de muerte de los islamistas, se exilió en Estados Unidos y empezó a trabajar de profesora en la Universidad de Washington. En 1996 regresó a Egipto para ejercer su activismo en favor de los derechos de las mujeres, especialmente a través de su obra escrita.
