Cassandra Clare nació de padres estadounidenses en Teherán, Irán, y pasó gran parte de su infancia viajando por el mundo, incluida una caminata por el Himalaya cuando era niña, donde pasó un mes viviendo en la mochila de su padre. Vivió en Francia, Inglaterra y Suiza antes de los diez años.
