En 2006, Hosseini fue nombrado embajador de buena voluntad del ACNUR (Alto Comisionado de Naciones Unidas para los Refugiados) y en 2007 puso en marcha la Fundación Khaled Hosseini, destinada a proporcionar ayuda humanitaria al pueblo de Afganistán para aliviar su sufrimiento y contribuir a crear prósperas comunidades.
