Escribió más de doce mil páginas de novelas, cuentos y artículos, y es uno de los escritores japoneses más populares dentro y fuera de su país. Mantuvo una profunda amistad con el escritor Yukio Mishima, del que fue su mentor y difusor. Recibió el Premio Nobel de Literatura en el año 1968.
