Nació en Lancashire en 1900, hijo de un director. Sus libros más conocidos, Horizontes perdidos y Adiós, Señor Chips, fueron escritos durante los años treinta y se transformaron en éxitos de venta. Horizontes perdidos, se convirtió en una película de éxito de Hollywood en 1937.
