Este volumen comprende algunos libros de los llamados «deuterocanónicos», es decir, incluidos en el canon bíblico de los judíos en un segundo periodo de tiempo por las dudas surgidas en torno al origen de los mismos. De ellos, unos tuvieron mayor aceptación que otros entre los primeros escritores cristianos. Entre los primeros se cuentan los libros de Tobías, Judit y Ester, que presentan las historias de sus protagonistas como ideales de la fidelidad a Dios. En cambio los libros de los Macabeos no gozaron de la misma aceptación, y únicamente la historia de los siete hermanos, junto con el martirio de su madre, fue objeto de atención por parte de los escritores patrísticos.
