After World War II, during which time she was forced to flee Europe, Lenka Reinerová returns to a Prague that no longer resembles the open and cosmopolitan city of her adolescence. Her political activism before the war, her years in exile, and her Jewish heritage all make her a person of interest in the eyes of the paranoid authorities of the time, and this novel narrates the 15 months the author spent incarcerated in Prague between 1952 and 1953. The author describes her time in prison and the brutal interrogations she had to endure, memories of which also help to evoke many of her earlier memories. Reinerová speaks for a politically committed generation, now octogenarian, that bore witness to the political turmoil of the past century and lived to tell the tale.
