Hambrientos, desolados, deshumanizados, pero aún conservando vestigios reconocibles de su civilización (modos de vestir, códigos de honor, la división entre hombres y mujeres, estas últimas revelando un estado de sumisión e inferioridad frente a aquellos), se desplazan a través de un desierto (literal, pero también con una fuerte carga metafórica) hacia un mar que los lleve a Europa.
