Abandonó el Instituto a los catorce años para iniciar una formación autodidacta. Premio Nobel de Literatura 2007. Su contacto y amor por África constituyó la narrativa de algunas de sus novelas; el tema de la emancipación de la mujer abunda también en su obra de ficción. También incursionó en el terreno de la fantasía como ángulo de observación de la condición humana. El cuaderno dorado (1962) es su obra más famosa.
