White Fang is the main character and ti de of the novel published in 1906 by the American writer Jack London (1876-1916),originally published as a series in Outing magazine. 1he story takes place during the Klondike Gold Rush at the end of the 19th century,in the Yukon Territory in Canada. Narrated almost entirely from the viewpoint of White Fang (a dog¬wolf crossbred) the story focuses on his journey from cub to maturiry,his adventures and his relationships with humans and animals alike.The author makes the most of this unusual approach in storytelling,by digging deep into complex themes,such as human cruelry,redemption,survival and violence. White Fang reached worldwide recognition after its publication, especially with young readers,probably due to the geographical setting and the wild nature of the titular character.The stories are not directly related, but both deal with similar themes and situations,cementing the place of Jack London in American literature for posterity. The novel has been adapted into several forms of media,including film and television,furthering the reach of White Fang's story and immortalising in new and exciting ways the ideals of Jack London and his animal world.
Jack London (1876-1916), seudónimo de John Griffith Chaney, es uno de los grandes escritores estadounidenses de los albores del siglo XX. Su mundo se inspira en una interpretación muy subjetiva de la filosofía de Nietzsche y se construye a partir del principio de lucha por la supervivencia. Nacido en San Francisco, fue esencialmente un niño autodidacta que leía con avidez los fondos de la biblioteca pública. Con diecisiete años se embarcó en su primera goleta, rumbo a Japón. Tras varias experiencias como marinero y vagabundo -razón por la que también fue encarcelado-, London acudió a la Oakland High School y, posteriormente, a la Universidad de California, que tuvo que abandonar por problemas económicos. Como muchos, sufrió la fiebre del oro hasta que, finalmente, se dedicó a la escritura.
