Synopsis "White Michael & Brown Michael"
My name is Janet L. Mckay ~ I am a Mother of two children and have been married for over thirty years now. We had two children and their names are Michael who was five, and Matthew who was four 1995. This is a true story about one of my two sons’ whose name is Matthew. While my son Matthew was in nursery preschool, he met another child named Michael which was the same name as his brothers. Matthew recognized the name, but he could not comprehend in his mind how another child, had a name which was the same as his Brothers but with different color skin. This other Michael at this preschool was a child of color. So, Matthew called him Brown Michael. This was Matthew’s only way to comprehend and process the difference between his Brother Michael, and Brown Michael at nursery school within his young mind.I always wondered: ▸What if any child of any race were to say something like this in today’s world? ▸ How would we as adults or even the school handle my son, calling his new friend Brown Michael? ▸Could a child of this age ever be called a races, by making a statement like this in today’s world?
