Mark Baldwin
(1861-1934), American philosopher and psychologist, is one of the founders of developmental psychology and a precursor of modern cognitive developmental psychology. His main contribution was the search for a link between the evolution of the individual and the evolution of the human species. Revisiting Darwin's theories and questioning those of Lamarck, still prevalent in his time, he tried to reconcile for the first time fields as seemingly distant as philosophy and science, particularly in terms of genetics. Lucid, attentive, and bold, he placed great importance on the influence of society on child development through the description of the complex imitation process already evident in the early years of life. His proposal, very revolutionary for the time, laid the foundations for the research that would soon be developed by such eminent theorists as Piaget, Vygotsky, and Wallon.
