Jim Amparo

Jim Aparo (1932–2005) was an influential American comic book artist, known for his work at DC Comics from the 1970s to the 1990s. Born in New Britain, Connecticut, Aparo was self-taught, drawing inspiration from artists like Alex Raymond and Milton Caniff. Before turning to comics, he worked in advertising and briefly studied at the Hartford Art School. His career took off in 1966 when Dick Giordano, editor at Charlton Comics, offered him his first professional contract. There, Aparo worked in various genres, including western, science fiction, and mystery.

At DC Comics, Aparo gained great notoriety for his dynamic and detailed style. He was the main artist for The Brave and the Bold from 1971 to 1983, where he illustrated stories of Batman alongside other heroes. He also worked on Adventure Comics with the character Spectre and on Aquaman, where he handled the complete art in several stories. His most notable work includes the story "A Death in the Family" (1988), which addresses the death of Jason Todd, the second Robin.

Aparo received several accolades, such as the Shazam Award in 1972 and the Inkpot Award in 1993. He was posthumously inducted into the Will Eisner Hall of Fame in 2019. He died on July 19, 2005, in Southington, Connecticut.
